About Amulree Tearoom

It had been a few years since the Tearoom closed. At the beginning of August 2012, on one of those few hot and sunny days, my wife and I took a pleasant ride out to visit the village of Amulree

What a welcome sight to see it had been recently re-opened and under new management. For years it had been a welcoming sight for many a weary rambler. This truly a place for walking through the beautiful hills of this desolate part of Perthshire.

Directions - How to get there

The road from Gilmerton, just east of the hilly market town of Crieff, passes through the Sma' Glen before climbing up from Newton Bridge onto open moorland meandering on its way to Aberfeldy and Dunkeld. Then, out of nowhere, there is this little hamlet of Amulree, sitting at the east end of Glen Quaich and Loch Freuchie.

Around and About the vacinity

Once a bustling farming community of over a thousand souls. That all changed, and by the middle of the 19th century, all but a few had left as part of the Highland Clearance driven out by the local lairds. There is an interesting write up of the families that left, inside the quaint church, with it's familiar dovecote bell tower. Certainly worth a visit before you move off on your onward journey.
